Argos intership report

Posted: December 17th, 2009 | No Comments »

The three months of internship in Argos Center for Art and Media is over. During this time I was working on problems of digitalizing the biggest video art archive in Belgium. The time of physical media storage is getting over. The lifespan of DVDs is a problem and people’s preferences how to access media are changing. The youtube’ish attitude is coming to video art as well. Everything has to be accessible immediately.

Half of my work time was manual labor with ripping the DVDs. With a fellow co-worker we were able to insert one fourth of the 4000 video art works. I created a little script to make this monkey-work faster. You had to enter the shelf mark of the work and the disc. We just had to fill the box with DVDs from the shelfs and change the disks.

The second part of the time I was working on creating a new interface for the video art database. Custom built old interface was stuck in development and needed a new face. It wasn’t possible to browse the works and see the videos, it was very slow as well. It was designed for physical objects, not virtual.

First I had to write export script for the old database. Then find a way to present the cleaned up information. Comparing different packages for libraries and museums, I found nearly perfect open source software Omeka. It’s still quite young, but looks very promising. It could be described as a Wordpress for museum interfaces. It includes support for different plugins and themes, also for meta-data standards.

The existing entries were imported and the interface was tuned and advanced. It’s not complete or really usable yet, but the progress has kicked off. After going back to Estonia, I will work with Argos to develop the publicly accessible video art database. The result should be seen in October 2010.

Cat Counter

“Cat Counter” is a game for regular DVD players. Download link at the bottom.

YouTube Preview Image

In the autumn 2008 Teijo Pellinen – author of interactive films – was giving a workshop in Tallinn on DVD authoring and it’s interactive capabilities. During the two day session with DVD Studio Pro we created a game called “Cat Counter”. The game “just happened” around a video clip I made of my cat Lasse who is into freestyle sports. As part of my work involves photographing skateboarding and BMX bikers, I took Lasse as the new subject. We shot a wall-to-wall transfer with the bed as a kicker.

You can download the Cat Counter and play it at Your regular DVD player. Just burn the ISO file on a DVD and insert the disk into a regular DVD player. Choose the language and start counting the cats. After each clip You have to answer a question about the number of cats seen in the clip. It’s kind of a memory game – the target is to memorize all the different cats that run on the wall. And it’s not easy at all!

If somebody is interested in creating the soundtrack or developing the Cat Counter, let me know!

DOWNLOAD THE GAME (ISO 215MB)
DVD COVER (JPG 600KB, use right-click and Save Link As)

If You don’t know how to burn is then ask Jeeves.

Extra photos from RANDOMS * 2008 gallery.

PS. No treats were given to Lasse, it was from the true love of the sport.

Internship in ARGOS center for art & media

Posted: November 6th, 2009 | 1 Comment » Argos

At the moment I am working in the Argos center as an intern. Argos is a video art archive in Brussels. It was founded in 1989 and is one of the biggest collection on video art in Europe. They also have a proper library and gallery spaces. The current exhibition is calles Actors and Extras. My task is to help with digitalization of the archive and building the new interface for the database. The old one has many problems and is not extendable. The new one will be probalby based on open sourced software Omeka. It’s like Wordpress for archives and museums. The center itself is on the beginning of a lot of change. The idea about video is changing and the wish to break free from physical object as DVDs etc is getting bigger. The other target is to widen the audience to Internet. Besides me, Maksim Surin (with Estonian-Russian background) is working there to promote these changes.
